Coniferous ornamental tree with deciduous foliage, grows up to 20 m in height, native to the eastern and southern U.S. There swamp cypresses form characteristic forests, growing often directly out of the water. Bizarre vertical root projections (cypress knees) protrude from the ground to a height of 40 cm. The tree forms a slender, gray-brown trunk, much expanded at the base. Its crown has a pyramidal shape. Leaves are short, soft and light green, in autumn they take a beautiful maroon colour (swamp cypresses are famous for their showy autumn colour).
