Ornamental climber with showy flowers, decorative leaves, and edible fruit, grows up to 5 ms in height, native to the Far East. Has ligneous, twining shoots, densely covered with half-evergreen five-lobed leaves (they do not fall during milder winters). In spring blooms very profusely (clusters of purple-pink flowers with Cardamom scent). Then forms cucumber-like, pink fruits (circa 10 cm length). Fruits" flesh is edible, aromatic and very sweet. These fruits are a popular dessert in Japan, Korea and China. Fully hardy, likes fertile, moist soil, grows well in sun and partial shade. Sown in spring.
