(Dioscorea batatas "Kashiwagi")
Climbing ornamental plant with edible and tasty tubers, grows to 3 ms high, its inconspicuous flowers have very strong Cinnamon scent. Forms edible very large tubers (reaching up to 1 m in length and over 2 kg of weight), resembling a large carrot. Tubers have a potato-like consistency, but are much more tasty, sweet, containing 20% starch, and high percentage of vitamin B1 and C. Can be used in kitchen in the same way like potatoes (purée, casserole, soups, and as a main dish, can be boiled, fried and baked). Tubers can be dig out in the 2nd year after planting. Yam forms small bulbs at the base of the leaves, these bulbs in autumn fall to the ground, where they form new plants. Tubers can be overwintered in the ground (they are hardy to -20 ° C), or can be dig out and stored in the basement.
Yam likes sun and fertile soil, requires the support. Plants are resistant to pests or diseases.
