(Abelmoschus esculenta)
Annual, bushy vegetable, popular in the southern U.S., has a decorative, feathery leaves and beautiful, large yellow flowers. Edible are young, immature fruits (up to 10 cm long) collected circa one week after bloom. They have a wonderful, slightly spicy flavour, and are suitable for soups, casseroles, salads, etc. They can be boiled, fried and canned (pickled, frozen or dried).
Okra likes sun and sheltered, warm places, preferably in a glasshouse. Sown in April or July.
