Large ornamental shrub or small tree (up to 7 ms in height), native to the eastern United States. Has ovate, dark green leaves, turning yellow in autumn. Unusual flowers bloom abundantly in April and May, coming directly from the bark of older twigs. Flowers are pure white, bell-shaped, 3 cm in length, similar to the Snowdrop flowers. Then appear very large, winged fruits, which persist until early winter.
Likes sunny places and fertile, moist soils. Frost-hardy. Rapid growth.
