Ornamental shrub up to 3 ms in height. In European forests it has been widely eradicated due to widespread use of its wood for different folk rituals (such as fumigations, protection against evil forces, etc.) Its marinated buds are edible and used as capers substitute. Has a decorative, feathery leaves. In May and June large, dropping white and pink flowers are produced. Then appear very decorative fruits- inflated papery capsules 3-10 cm long, containing a few small nut-like seeds (in old times children used them as rattles).
This plant is undemanding and resistant. Prefers sunny places and moist soils. Frost hardy. Rapid growth.
